# Quick Search on Mac

Learn how to use Quick Search on your Mac to find any person, company, task, note, or email in your Daylite database from a single search field.

uick Search is Daylite's global search feature — it looks across your entire database at once, so you can find a person, company, task, note, or email without first navigating to that object's list. Instead of clicking through the Sidebar to track down a record, you can search from a single field in the toolbar and jump straight to what you need, no matter where you are in Daylite.

**Key facts:**

* Quick Search is available from the toolbar in every area of Daylite
* It searches across People, Companies, Projects, Opportunities, Groups, Tasks, Appointments, Notes, Emails, and Forms in one pass
* Partial words, compound searches, and accent-insensitive matching are all supported
* Results in the popover are capped at 20 per object type — use "Show All Results in List" to see everything
* A custom keyboard shortcut can bring Daylite to the front and jump to Quick Search from any app on your Mac — this is set up in Settings

## Opening Quick Search

You can get to the Search field in a few ways:

* Click directly into the Search field in the top-right corner of the toolbar.
* Choose **Edit > Find > Search Daylite** from the menu bar.
* Use the built-in keyboard shortcut **Command-Option-F** to jump straight to the field from anywhere in Daylite.

ou can also set up a custom keyboard shortcut that brings Daylite to the front and focuses the Search field from *any* application on your Mac. Go to Daylite > Settings > General to choose your Search shortcut.

## Performing a Search

Type a whole or partial word into the Search field. Results appear automatically as you type and continue to refine as you enter more characters.

* **Partial matches work.** You don't need to type a complete word.
* **Compound searches:** enter multiple words separated by spaces to search on more than one term at once.
* **Accented characters are normalized.** Searching "franc" will find "François" — you don't need to match accents exactly.

This same search logic also powers linking popovers throughout Daylite, so searching to link a record to another object feels identical to using Quick Search itself.

### What Quick Search Searches

Quick Search looks across the following object types in your database:

* People
* Companies
* Projects
* Opportunities
* Groups
* Tasks
* Appointments
* Notes
* Emails
* Forms

It searches beyond just names and titles — matching extends to major fields on each object, including phone numbers, details, addresses, and custom fields. For notes and emails, it's the full body content that's searched, not just the subject or title.

### Quick Search Results

Results appear in a popover directly below the Search field. The top of the popover lists matching results grouped by object type; when you select a result, additional details for that record appear underneath.

From here, you can:

* **Double-click a result** to open it in your current tab.
* **Hold Command-Option and double-click** a result to open it in a new tab instead.
* **Drag a result onto another Daylite record** to link the two together on the spot.
* **Click "more…" (or press the right arrow key)** next to an object type to see additional matches beyond the initial preview.<br>

* **Choose "Show All Results in List"** once you've expanded an object type — this takes you to that object's list in the sidebar with the filter already applied, removing the 20-result limit shown in the popover.
* **Click "back" (or press the left arrow key)** to return from a single object type back to the full, all-types results view.

## Related Settings

Want Quick Search one keystroke away, even when Daylite isn't the active application? See the Settings article for how to assign a global search shortcut.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**How do I open Quick Search without using my mouse?**

Press Command-Option-F from anywhere in Daylite to jump straight to the Search field. If you want to reach it from outside Daylite entirely — while working in another app — you can set up a separate global shortcut in Settings.

**Does Quick Search look inside emails and notes, or just titles?**&#x20;

It searches beyond titles and names. Matching extends to major fields on each object, including details, addresses, and custom fields, so a word buried inside a note or email body can still surface a result.

**Why don't I see all my results for an object type?**&#x20;

The popover shows a preview capped at 20 results per object type. Click "more…" (or press the right arrow key) to see additional matches, or choose "Show All Results in List" to view every match in that object's full list.

**Can I link a record directly from a search result?**&#x20;

Yes. Drag a result from the popover onto another Daylite record to link the two immediately, without opening either one first.

**Can I narrow a search to just one object type, like People or Tasks?**&#x20;

Yes. Start with a Quick Search, then select the object type you want to focus on and choose **Show All Results in List** to open all matching results for that object type. If you need more precise criteria, use that object's own Filter bar instead.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.daylite.app/help/mac-fundamentals/find-connect-and-organize/quick-search-on-mac.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
